The Tiled Corridor

Recalling a golden era in decorative tile use, The Tiled Corridor responds to historical research into Victorian era tiling in Craig House, former site of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, to create a warm welcome and informal wayfinding in the new Royal Edinburgh Building.

“I think the overall effect is extremely pleasing, welcoming and comforting. The new hospital building is quite clinical… The Tiled Corridor makes the first trip to the wards a bit more familiar, warm and less alien.

Commissioned by NHS Lothian Charity Tonic Arts. Manufactured in collaboration with Craven Dunnill Jackfield, plus 300 tiles made by Frances in her Edinburgh studio. Installed by Peter Navratil. Project managed by Becky Brazil.

“It has been a real delight to engage Frances on this project, from engagement with staff and patients, through research and design, to the detailing of final install. We’re delighted to have been able to commission this striking piece, which couples the rich tradition of decorative ceramics in hospital buildings of old with a stunning contemporary craft practice”
