The Grammar of Ornament | India

The Grammar of Ornament | India is a body of work made in response to the India pages of the pattern book, The Grammar of Ornament by Victorian architect and designer Owen Jones. Through a collection of abstract ceramic objects and sculptures the work explores the visual language of the book, its impact on British design and the origins of the decorative motifs in Indian culture.

The work was first exhibited in the group exhibition, A Fine Line at City Art Centre Edinburgh, featuring work by four contemporary artists based in Scotland – Lizzie Farey, Angie Lewin, Frances Priest and Bronwen Sleigh. Working with a variety of media, but united by detailed observation and strong draughtsmanship, the exhibition explored the group of artists' experiments with linear mark-making and drawing in its widest sense.

The exhibition toured to Inverness Museum & Art Gallery and Gracefield Arts Centre. An accompanying essay was commissioned by independent curator and writer, Amanda Game. A Fine Line
