A commission from Artlink Edinburgh & The Lothians to contribute to a collaborative project involving artists and visually impaired participants. The project combined poetry, sound and objects to create and present an audio description of the gallery spaces at the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh. Participants worked with poet Ken Cockburn to develop the descriptive poem, Pandoars Light Box, describing the three distinctive spaces of the Talbot Rice Gallery. Sound Artists Martin Parker and Jung In Jung devised a means of incorporating the poem into a sound instillation. Working with participants I developed a set of three ceramic forms to house the instillation. Designer and engineer Ronnie Watt resolved and produced the casing and fixings for the instillation. The project was co ordinated and managed by Susan Humble, Artlink Audience Development Officer. The work is permanently installed in The Talbot Rice Gallery. A publication by Artlink entitled Explorations in Participation documents this work as part of a wider project aiming to examine the experiences of older people in the arts and to create new opportunities for meaningful participation

St Johns

A residency for Artlink Edinburgh & The Lothians at St Johns Hospital in Livingston, working with patients and staff to generate work that would in some way alter and enliven specific spaces around the hospital. These included, The Mcmillan Daycare Centre, The Gym in Ward 17, The Psychology Department Meeting Room, The St Johns Gallery, The Canteen and The Hospital Corridors. These images depict workshops, events, working drawings and finished work created over a 16 month period. Thank you to all the patients and staff at St Johns who contributed to the projects through participating in workshops, sharing ideas, attending events and helping produce work or just stopping to chat and say hello. New Manor Ware

New Manor Ware is a bespoke table setting designed especially for the Banqueting Room of the Manor Lodge Turret House developed in response to the Yorkshire Artspace Ceramic Residency program based at their Manor Oaks Ceramic Studio and on site at Sheffield Manor Lodge. During the 17th century, local potter John Fox set up a workshop in a disused wing of The Manor House at Manor Lodge producing functional domestic pottery known as Manor Ware. Widely used across Sheﬃeld, remnants of the pottery are still being found in the archaeological digs that regularly take place across the Manor Lodge site today. During the residency I have worked with a number of different community groups to explore the ornately decorated plasterwork ceiling in the banqueting room of the Tudor Turret House, using original drawings made by individuals from these groups to from the basis of a range of surface pattern designs for a contemporary take on Manor Ware. Inspired by the traditional use of the banqueting room as a place to hold lavish sweet feasts, I also worked closely with the students and staff in the Freeman College Whittle Tang Cutlery Department to create a set of steel and ceramic Cake Slices that form part of the complete table setting. New Manor Ware is my personal response to the richly layered history of craftsmanship and decorative art that forms an integral part of the Manor Lodge story, from the 16th century through to the present day. New Manor Ware was presented as part of the Sheffield Manor Lodge Field to Feast Festival on Saturday the 24th September in the banqueting room that inspired it’s design. Guest were invited to climb the spiral staircase of the turret house to partake in a sweet feast of specially made, gold leaf decorated ginger cake, baked on site by Green Estate café manager Anthony Dunn. This event was documented by timelapse filmmaker Richard Bolam. Thank you to all the participants who contributed to the designs for New Manor Ware: Manor Lodge Over 50’s Lunch Club. FCA&C Coastal Path

Fife Contemporary Art & Craft invited me to take up one of three residencies exploring the Fife coastal path supported by Celebrating Fife 2010. Based at Buckhaven Community Centre I worked with users of the Buckhaven Community Pottery and CLEAR to make contemporary versions of ceramic carpet bowls, also known as ‘Piggies’, which were traditionally produced in the Fife potteries and were a very popular Scottish parlour game. Four boxed sets of carpet bowls were designed and created by Gareth Baglow, Janette Easson, Christine Flynn, Marion Garry and Liz Houston. We decided to call the project ‘Buckhynd Braes Bools’ and used the finished sets to hold a community bowls tournament. The completed sets will now be placed in Berts Bar, The Railway Tavern and Buckhaven Community Centre, all of which are participating in the Fife Coastal Path ‘Welcome Port’ scheme where you can stop for a rest, some refreshment and a game of bowls with the Buckhynd Braes Bools. Pentland Court

An Artlink Edinburgh project working at St Johns Hospital with residential patients in Pentland Court. Over a period of 13 weeks residents worked on pre made clay tiles exploring pattern and mark making using ceramic printing and imprinting processes to create a permanent wall panel for Pentland Court.

Bone china forms

From 2000 – 2002 I worked predominantly with Bone china paper clay on a series of objects that focused on the notion of drawing in three dimensions, using the material to define positive and negative spaces. These objects evolved to include drawn marks on the surface of the bone china and led directly into work for the solo exhibition Line and Form. The Bone china forms series was exhibited at Dundee Contemporary Arts, The Scottish Gallery, Barrett Marsden Gallery, SOFA Chicago, and The Hub: Edinburgh International Festival Centre as part of the Scottish Gallery curated series of exhibitions Material Matters. A Method For Creative Design

Work made in response to an invitation from visual artist Abraham Cruzvillegas to contribute work to Autoconstrucción a collaborative performance project for the gallery Kurimanzutto Mexico City, 20th May 2010. The objects depict a set of seven symbols devised by Adolfo Best Maugard for his book A Method for Creative Design published in 1927. The objects will be used during the performance, along with contributions from 19 other artists, and then given away as gifts to all the participants. Each object is wrapped in a fabric bag printed with pages from the book and a request by me for information on the objects location and use.
